Okay, so I had to get my tires changed – one of those dreaded necessities of owning a car. While I was waiting I started talking to an old man who, too, was waiting.

He was watching the NFL Channel and the recorded Super Bowl of last year. Occasionally, he would make a comment about the teams or the game.  I said, “You know, there’s an assistant coach up the road at Florida Atlantic University who played a season for the Indianapolis Colts.  He always said that it was evident who that team was playing for.  It would not be surprising to walk out onto the practice field and see coaches praying for players and players praying for each other.”  The old man just kind of nodded his head.

“Also, Heath Evans, who plays for the Patriots lives up in West Palm Beach; he also has Christian beliefs,” I said.  I continued, “If you don’t mind me asking, what do believe will happen to you when you die?”

This started a conversation between me and the gentleman for the next 20 minutes.¬† He would always make a comment, but then always finish it with something like, “But I don’t want to get into religion.” It was great to not “get into religion” with¬†him, but still talk about spiritual things.¬† He was a¬†practicing Jew who did not believe in Jesus Christ. We¬†talked about the Law, about¬†his forefathers and the patriarchs, and about Christ being the fulfillment of the Law and the¬†fulfillment of¬†God’s Promise.¬†We talked about how Christ taught us to love, yet because of our disobedience, we do not love God nor our neighbor as God requires. Furthermore, we cannot know love without knowing Christ.¬† He was a pleasant man and we had a great conversation, but unfortunately, he was stuck in his ways and while a practicing Jew, not very engaged in talking about the strength of his beliefs.
